McDonald's has taken down a holiday advertisement produced with Artificial Intelligence following encountering significant public disapproval.
The brief spot was developed with the help of generative AI clips and was first published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.
Shortly after its release, viewers on social media criticized the implementation of AI in the advert. Several called it "disturbing" and "jarringly assembled".
"This incident serves as an important lesson as we examine the effective application of generative technology," commented a spokesperson from McDonald's Netherlands.
The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and US firm The Sweetshop. It showed various scenarios that often go badly over the holidays, using the theme "the most terrible time of the year".
Campaigns that incorporate AI tools have become a growing phenomenon among major companies, especially for the Christmas period.
After the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's chief executive, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the project.
Bridge claimed, the development required "over a month and a half" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then shaped in post-production "just as we would on any high-craft production".
"This wasn't just an AI trick," she said. "It was a film."
While the Dutch McDonald's ad was mostly panned, the sentiment for some AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.
For instance, a consecutive AI-generated Christmas spot from another major brand reportedly achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from viewers.
However, several companies have also faced criticism for employing the technique in marketing. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that some described as "lazy" and "disturbing".
The episode illustrates the continuing discussion within the advertising and production industries about the trade-off between technological innovation and creative integrity.
